The general aim of the project is to develop, in the short term, small cogeneration systems which can be integrated into the National grid and which do not compromise the environment and which, unlike photovoltaic systems, are economically sustainable for the end user even without financial aid from the State. The use of an internal combustion engine in a small cogeneration system represents one of the solutions with the highest possibilities of success, thanks to the maturity and reliability of these systems, as well as the development to which they have been subjected over the last few years in terms of global efficiency in transforming energy as well as the impact on the environment. The project therefore foresees the development and implementation of a prototype internal combustion engine (15-25 kWe) for the cogeneration of electricity and heat. The application, with unconventional technology and plant solutions, is aimed at increasing the duration of the system and heat and electrical performance, at the same time reducing noise, dimensions and costs for purchasing and servicing. The contribution requested will enable a faster achievement of results forecast and will be mostly dedicated to the phases concerning industrial research which will benefit the users of the National Grid.
